ABOUT NBAB
Night Basketball and Books
(“NBAB”) was founded in 1994 in response to the 1993 Halloween homicides of
3 teenage boys from Northwest Pasadena. Initially, the goal was to provide a drop-in evening basketball
program for teenage males as an alternative to spending idle time on the streets in this community where
substance abuse and violence were rampant.
Today NBAB
is a goal oriented program whose mission is to provide at-risk children,
youth and young adults with tools to attain cultural literacy, life skills and academic success. Our
program has resulted in a tremendous decline of violence-related injuries and deaths since 1994.
NBAB
has motivated youth to graduate from high school (80% of NBAB youth matriculate to a college setting)
and broadened social and cultural awareness (100% of enrolled youth state that NBAB
provided opportunities
not available at home or school).
NBAB
's program includes tutoring, mentoring, academic enrichment classes, college preparation, leadership
workshops, sports leagues, field trips and summer camp opportunities for youth living in disadvantaged
neighborhoods. We serve over 100 youth ranging in ages 5 - 17.
